About GK Isang Milyong Bayani (One Million Heroes)
The work of Gawad Kalinga is fueled by the heroic service of a massive army of volunteers from all over the country and overseas.
In 2005, GK started GK1MB or Isang Milyong Bayani (One Million Heroes) in the Philippines (called One Million Builders in other countries), a program that seeks to raise one million volunteers from all over the Philippines and the world. The volunteers provide their talents, skills and time, at least 4 hours a month to assist in GK communities.
Annually, GK volunteers from the Philippines and other countries gather together to build for 5 days in areas that are in most need of care. This much-anticipated event is called the Bayani Challenge (Heroes Challenge), usually held in April.
GK also engages professionals who want to volunteer in GK communities to share their expertise in various fields. These volunteers commit their skills, talents and expertise for 6 months to 2 years of full time service in GK communities.
